First of all, I hope all is well on your end and wish the best of luck to any of you that are suffering damages and losses from Hurricane Ike. Port O'Connor dodged another bullet with this hurricane. Amazing how we were preparing for it to hit our area the week before last and then spent last week getting everything back in order around the lodge and boat slip. The fishing around Port O'Connor was tough during the higher tides that came in with Ike, but now that our tides are back to normal the fishing has improved. The baits of choice have been free lining live piggy perch with 5/0 VMC Wide Gap Hooks and also dark soft plastic lures for best results. Plum Gamblers and Red Shad Bass Assassins have been working best with 1/8 oz lead heads.
My partner Rocky Whitley and I finished the last tournament of the 2008 Texas Redfish Series a couple of weeks ago. The Championship Tournament was a 2 day challenge and was held in Kemah Tx. We went into this tournament with very little knowledge of the area as far as places to fish...as a matter of fact neither one of us had ever fished the Galveston/Kemah area until the day before the tournament. We found some fish late Friday while pre-fishing but with some very high north winds Saturday Morning it was like starting over, somehow we managed to catch a few reds each day and made weigh in both days with our 2 reds. After 4 tournaments, we were sitting in 7th place overall for team of the year. The championship tournament was our 5th and final tournament of the series and after it was over we finished overall 5th place team of the year out of 181 teams. Hopefully, next year we can do a little better, but we were both pleased with this being our first attempt at these type of tournaments amongst some very good teams.
