Well, It's hard to believe but duck season has come and is nearly gone. We have one more week of the season, but I am done chasing ducks and packing up for Baffin this week. This past week of duck season was fair to good for us, but we did not have much variety. We continued to shoot our limits of Pintails and Redheads along with a few teal, scaup, mottled ducks and a couple of widgeon. I am looking forward to fishing again and FYI...I have changed boat launch locations as well as place of accommodations for the 2008 Baffin Season. I will be launching from Bluff's Landing in Flour Bluff and I have been fortunate to connect with Annette at Bluff's Landing for this year's accommodations. They do have a website, so if you are interested in what they have here it is
www.bluffslanding.com. I feel this will be a lot easier on all of us and they even have a restaurant on location. If you need directions to Bluff's Landing, they have a link on their website as well. Feel free to call or email me with any questions.
I have had questions on what has been going on in Baffin in regards to the water conditions. Rumor has it that the brown tide is back and just to let you know...it is. But please do not be alarmed by this. It is very common for Baffin Bay and I have fished many times down there when it's been around. I actually had a malfunction with my airboat on Friday Jan 11th, so being that I was out of commission for duck hunting for a few days waiting on airboat parts, I ran down to Baffin that
Friday night and fished the
Texas Saltwater Trout Series Elite Tour Tournament on that following Saturday the 12th with a lot of persuasion from my partner Capt Mark Robinson. I hadn't touched a rod in 2 months nor did I get to pre-fish any, so the confidence to do good was low. The tournament was out of Port Aransas, but we and most of the other teams decided to run by boat to Baffin, because we had more confidence in finding bigger fish down there. In this tournament, you weigh in 3 trout, with no more than 2 of them over 25 inches. We hit two spots, the brown tide was present at both, but there was still fish to be caught. We ended the day with our 3 trout weighing 17.45 lbs. We had a 24 3/4", 26 1/4" and a 27" trout to take to the scale. We only caught 18-20 fish all day, but we got the bites we needed to finish in 4th place out of 50 Elite Teams and won a little money as well. Here are the results and weights of all teams...
http://www.troutseries.com/2008_Results.html ...The presence of Brown Tide can definitely make fishing tougher than normal, mostly because of water clarity, but there is still a chance to catch fish. I will keep ya'll posted on our next tournament of this series which is
on Feb 2nd and the beginning of our 2008 Baffin season on the next update. Here's a couple pics from this past week.
